As we near the turn of the calendar some of you may choose words of expectation & anticipation for the upcoming year. If the Davies girls were to choose a word for their upcoming season "new" could very well be in the running. The season, obviously, is new but likewise will be their pursuit of titles and many of the players who will be counted on significantly to reach those goals. New can be exciting and if history has taught anything, they will bring excitement to the court many nights moving forward.
But enough prefacing, here's what coach Safranski had to say about the team
Which highlights from last season especially stood out to you?
I am very proud of the accomplishments last years team made. Although we came up short in the championship game, there were many things to be proud of for our athletes. Being back to back EDC Tournament Champions was one. Maneuvering through a covid season that we never really knew if each game would happen or what the season would look like was a major accomplishment as well. I was also very proud of the way our players bought in to playing with each other and for each other to become the best team we could be.
Did you take your team to any camps this past Summer?
How did your team benefit from the workouts?
We went to the UMary, MSUM and Breakdown Basketball Camps this past summer. We were able to keep building on what we established last year and get some of our younger players into our system. Overall, I thought our summer workouts and team camps were very good for our team.
Do you have a sense who may help fill in for the talented departures?
We return two starters off last years team in Ava Wild and Taylor Safranski. We have returning players that saw varsity time last year in Ashton Safranski, Marissa Burian, Ashley Wacha and Karley Franks. We are expecting them to play key roles this season. Maci Wheeldon, Tali Thull, Kennedy Vettel, Brooke Everson, Camille Deringer and Alex Feldner will also help us this season.
Is there a certain aspect of the game that you think will be the strength of your team?
Defense – our goal is to play relentless on the defensive end of the court and have constant pressure on our opponents.
To boil it all down, what would make the upcoming season a successful one?
We want to build off the success we had last year and keep fighting for a championship. Along with our returning players, we feel we have players on this year’s team that have been waiting for their opportunity to show their talents and make this year another great year for Davies Girls Basketball.
