Hawley Boys

The Hawley boys will head into the Winter seeking to add to the school's rich tradition of athletic accomplishment. With who they will send out this season they will have a great chance to make some noise in the conference.

Here's what coach Stoa had to say about the team

As you reflected upon it, is there a highlight or two that stands out from last season?

The boys showed nice growth throughout our Covid season. The second time around the conference was much improved from the first. We were able to get a win off of DGF and two from Barnesville, while playing Perham and Breckenridge tough.

Graduated senior Justin Koski led the Heart O'Lakes in Free Throw Shooting % while then freshman Brevin Stoa led the league in three point shooting %.

Did you take your team to any camps this past Summer?

How did your team benefit from that?

We had a "full" summer of individual workouts and team camps/tournaments. We played in multiple Breakdown tournaments along with MSUM and Concordia's team camps. As usual the individual workouts help the player improve their skills within our philosophies and the team events help us get an early start on gelling as a unit.

Who are some of the players you suspect will be impactful?

Leading returners from last season: Hayden Grani (Sr) 14.3 ppg/4.2 rpg/3.3 apg/2.1 spg Brady Gratton (Sr) 8.7 ppg/5.5 rpg Mason Gratton (Jr) 8.3 ppg/2.4 rpg/2.1 apg/2.0 spg Brevin Stoa (So) 6 ppg/2.0 rpg/2.1 apg/1.1 spg (led HOL in 3pt % at 54%) Other returning letter-winners: Carson Brew (Sr) Bryant Carlisle (Sr) Bailey Thomson (Sr)

All returning letter-winners have a chance to make major contributions, in addition to Sam Senske (Jr, played JV due to transfer). Sam gives the team size and strength around the basket on both ends of the floor.

Other possible contributors: Derek Tibbetts (Jr) John Vetter (Jr) Landon Bakke (So) Is there a certain aspect of the game that you think will be the strength of your team?

The 2020-2021 Nugget team is a couple of years in the making. This core of this team has played a ton of minutes over the past two seasons and this year will be the time to show if they have learned what it takes to win in the Heart O'Lakes Conference and Section 8AA. This team understands how to play the right way on offense, sharing the basketball to find open looks anywhere on the floor. This year, they need to get more offense going at the rim, which will help them capitalize on their looks from deep. The biggest improvements need to be made on the defensive end of the floor. This team needs to show an improved mental toughness on the defensive end, especially on the boards.

Thanks again coach!
