This season's journey to the postseason and Frisco, Texas has 12 pre-scheduled stops, with only one break between now & late November. There will be twists, turns & trouble along the route but through it all the Herd will make progress. Following each game this will be the only place to find the thoughts about it. As great as the destination can be, enjoy the weekly pit stops along the way!
Maybe today would have gone this way whether it was game five or game one. What we know is that the team took several steps forward since last Saturday and they all seem like they can done weekly without fluke.
it starts with the defense as they bottled-up illinois St.'s rushing like Cola had just become the team's official sponsor! Only time will tell if it's the beginning a trend but holding anyone to an average of less than two yards per carry needs to be recognized! The other half of these Birds' offense was decent and efficient but no scores balances out the lack of turnovers. Holding the whole thing to just one entry into the end zone will work about 99% of the time.
That 1% gets sliced down even more when the complimenting offense only coughs it up once while getting home six times. A pair of the scores finished in Barika Kpeenu's hands while his battery-mate Charmar Brown cracked the century mark for the second time in as many weeks.
With the quarterback now standing alone with the most 200-yard passing games in program history the whole operation is at a new level. That threshold is less than half of actual, prolific college passing offenses but even with the string of pros that have come through the Dome people would flip out about going spread and flinging the ball all over the field. But unadaptability is not the point right now.
Simply stated, it was the best performance so far
With the two biggest games of the regular season on the horizon the offense and defense will need to exceed that level and find impactful plays from all three phases to reach 4-0 in the conference.
If they can reach that milestone it will be a pretty easy cruise into the top seed. They will face tougher tests than Illinois St. presented but the primary souvenir from this stop on the journey is that they can dominate with basic execution. That's a great takeaway!
