The classical definition for Slobberknocker is a literal hard hit. I'm going to play off that somewhat in a more figurative manner. While in contrast, and maybe more obviously, the Naw's are things that shouldn't have happened and/or need to change.
Phenom's Encore
I don't think I'm the only one that wondered how Trey Lance would follow up his debut last Saturday. Factoring in that he would be going up against scholarship players that are preparing to be apart of the league that NDSU has been atop for so long, a less impressive outing seemed quite reasonable. But the young quarterback still managed to shine. His passing wasn't quite as Mahomes-esque but there were still completions that seemed beyond his years and his mobility was displayed as a lethal weapon for the offense when other options aren't able to get going. All in all, I would say it was exactly the sort of encore that anyone could ask to happen!
Top Options
Amongst the options that Lance had to work with, he seems to already have a strong report with his tight-ends. It was good to see Ben Ellefson back on the field after he missed game 1 but the seniors presence didn't eliminate the ability of the youngsters to impact the game. Noah Gindorff was the one who made a special play when called upon, taking a catch well short of the end zone and turning it into six points. If I may be so bold, it was the sort of play that should be included in his highlights for posterity. Tight-ends being important to the offense is nothing new but QB1 has gone 2/2 having them as more than blockers primarily, much more in fact.
New Back
One of the predictions I made for the season was that Ty Brooks and Saybein Clark would be this year's version of Dunn & Anderson. Yeah, I'm already starting to re-think that. Clark is still young enough that he could become a very accomplished runner for NDSU but if today and last Saturday are to be believed then the main carriers will be Brooks and Dimitri Williams with the possibility of Seth Wilson or Kobe Johnson mixed in for good measure. There are still a wealthy of opportunities and whose number gets called may depend on each weeks individual game plan. Except the two senior runners seem on track to distinguish themselves from the rest. Brooks doesn't have a lot to prove to me but Williams has been a wonderful piece of the puzzle that I had not even given thought about. I don't think I'm the only one that he's snuck up on, but by now the element of surprise should be out the window.
Code Green
The defense was not at it's sharpest today yet still managed to hold UND to one touchdown. Along the way they were inches from completing four interceptions which would have almost certainly maintained the shutout while allowing the offense to come through with a couple more touchdowns. Nevertheless they only allowed a single score and on the merit of that alone they deserve to be on the positive side of the scale.
I admit that this is a little on the short side but there weren't any other especially positive or negative parts of the game on which to focus. If you disagree, by all means say so!
