Offseason Opener

With five weeks to go there is plenty yet to be decided about the Purple's season but since they have the weekend off, it's time to take a baby step or two towards the next big event on the calendar.

No, not the final game.

For all the good that they've managed to do over last two months, they are well down on the list of teams likely to just make that event.

The next big event on the calendar will be Detroit, April 25 - 27.

With five weeks to go the exact selection that they will have remains in flux but projections have them currently in the high teens to low 20s. With 14 teams having five or fewer wins, that projection holds water.

But doesn't assure that they will be out of the running for a quarterback, should all three of the remaining options create more question marks at the position than there currently are.

With up to six players in the mix for top-32 selection, Minnesota may have a good one whenever they come on the clock. If they lock in on one that would require a trade up, that possibility may also present itself.

But for the first selection, to help incentivize Flores to take a pay raise and stick around, going defense has more appeal with each passing day. Think how great the scheme could be with the long-awaited heir to Kevin Williams?!

That would still leave the need looming over the franchise and at some point, for KA-M & KO to be truly successful, they will have to find their 10 - 18 year starting quarterback. With as many as are projected to go in the first round, the second could be extra full of talent at other positions like DT or CB so the conventional wisdom may be spot-on.

Finishing that Thursday with JJ McCarthy or Michael Penix would add plenty of juice to the franchise as they look to have a long stretch with Justin Jefferson & Jordan Addison.

It's necessary to think about and fun to talk about future quarterbacks but as the squad has the day on the couches like the rest of us, don't forget that more needs to be done to make them a true Conference & League champion outfit than to just find that guy.
