The second chance for a Sheyenne team to advance toward an EDC championship was even more surprising to me than the girl's game end up being. That's partly due to the fact that I hadn't seen the Firebirds play and had seen the Mustangs multiple times. Yes, I went in with a clear bias based on seeing & believing.
Sheyenne started the game with a narrow lead but upon the loss of the lead, just tried to play with them. Into the intermission they managed to close it to a 5 point game and were able to tie it up a minute into the second half. Devils Lake pushed back in what became another tug-of-war in the evening.
Half way through the second they were knotted at 51. A minute later the score was 54 all and then 57 a piece. The Basketball equivalent of a Tennis rally then ended with the Mustangs breaking to the tune of a six point swing by Devils Lake in a minutes time. The back & forth shooting proved to be the last gasp that Sheyenne could muster. The Firebirds finished their run to the 16 point win from the free throw line before the home players were instructed to lay off.
Devils Lake 80, Sheyenne 64
Sheyenne was lead by 26 from Christian Kuntz with Tyler Terhark (11) being the only other player in double figures. Devils Lake on the other hand finished with four players at and above 10. Big man Grant Nelson paced the group with 20 while Josh Dahlen (16) & Leif Nelson (15) competed for second while Joey Frelich (10) round out the quartet.
