Fighting for Position

After a quick 3 and out to start the game by the Eagles, West Fargo pushed the ball down the field and scored the first touchdown of the evening in only six plays, the first of which was an incompletion. The capper was a highlight-reel catch by the already highly-recruited Carson Hegerle to make it 7-0.

After trading punts, the ball was back in Reid Hartness' hands. From seven yards out, Truman Werremeyer muscled his way into the endzone to even the score at 7's with just under three minutes to go in the first quarter.

Despite a handful of highlight plays during the second quarter, the score remained the same as each team headed into the locker room. Each team showed why they are very much both in the mix for the conference as the stretch-run begins!

The third quarter followed the same script as the second, for most of the quarter. Another highlight-reel play by Hegerle - this time on defense as he used his receiving skills to reel in an interception - was the best play of the first six minutes. As the clocked tipped over, Hegerle was on the receiving end of the second punt of the quarter but with his back to the end zone he scooped the ball up and tried to make the highlight of the night, only to be stopped at the 14.

The offense picked up their star two plays later as Seth Nyhof was on the receiving end of a bomb Peyton Jantzi. But then, again, Denver Piechowski was amongst the players to force a fumble and he recovered the loose ball. Have a night young man!!

West Fargo's defense stymied the Eagles from scoring another touchdown but Davies broke the tie with a 44-yard field goal with 3.5 minutes left in the quarter.

After forcing another stop, Davies went into their bag of tricks with a halfback pass along the sideline that nearly hit big but instead put them in another position to punt before the quarter concluded.

And so, West Fargo opened the final frame with the ball. But within a minute of the clock rolling they had been forced to punt it away. A kick that set up Davies on the short side of mid-field.

Reid Hartness didn't waste any time in putting a hard stamp on the game as he pulled the ball down and gained 7 on the scramble. He doubled-down on his legs with a designed run right after to get his team to the 32. He kept on rolling with two more runs of his own, which gained another first down, down to the 20. On 3 and 9 he zipped the pass through the heart of the West Fargo defense to Colten Alme to make it a 16-7 game with under 7.5 remaining.

West Fargo had a chance for a big-play in response but after an incompletion, Alme was the one to come down with an interception deep downfield.

The ensuing possession ended with an attempted punt that almost became a first down for Davies after the snap was botched. The punter, Dylan Pogue, came within a yard of picking up the first down!

On 4 & 2 West Fargo went with an option play but then, again, Piechowski came through with the impact play to prevent the conversion.

West Fargo kept the door cracked by pushing Davies to another fourth down but the Eagles had enough in their tank to gain the yards and then ended it with a kneel.

It was a contest that showed that each team are legitimate contenders in the conferences. But with the result, the path became far, far tougher for West Fargo.

Davies 16, West Fargo 7

Colten Alme made a major push in the second half, as did his quarterback.

But when a guy makes play after play after play, it can't be ignored.

Denver Piechowski
