Davies will once again have a handful of the best players in the state this Fall, many of whom will have their first chance at postseason success. Before the frost & flurries take effect they will have to run the gauntlet, beginning with #3 Mandan & #1 Sheyenne in back-to-back games.
Here's what coach Werremeyer had to say about the team & process
Before talking about the present, are there one or two highlights from last Fall that stand out for you?
I was extremely proud of our kids last year on how they finished the season after we were eliminated from the playoffs. I thought they showed great maturity and passion for the sport. Highlights of our season were beating Bismarck for the first ever time in program history and coming back against Mandan after being down 14-0 on the road and winning the game in overtime.
Did your team take part in any camps or organized activities this Summer? Did any young players show for the first time that they may be ready to contribute this Fall during the camp/activity?
We had great participation in our summer camp that we run during June and July. We will have a healthy competition at several positions this fall. OL — John O’Neill, Jack Bullinger, Isaac Kerzman, Christian McCarthy, Grant Hubbard, Bridger Heisler, Gunnar Majerus, Andre Werk RB — Luke Lorenz, Oliver Lucht, Zach Lilly, Elijah Hayes, Keaton Schwab, Jackson Greff, Nicholas Hasbargen, Parker Dewald, Grant Tschosik WR — Ray Brown, Maddox Maloney, Miles McKinnon, Nicholas Hasbargen, Kemani Davis, Yorke QB — Mason Klabo and Gage Brewer DL — OL above plus Jack Brenden, Parker Dewald, Peter Havelka, Austin Burrell LB — Zach Lilly, Elijah Hayes, Gage Brewer, Bennett Gerlach, Malachi Werremeyer, Oliver Lucht, Nicholas Hasbargen S — Luke Lorenz, Grant Tschosik, Jackson Greff, Maddox Maloney, Miles McKinnon
Did missing the postseason have any lasting impact for your guys?
Missing the playoffs ended our season 2-3 weeks early so we missed out on the ability to practice and get better during those two weeks. It also leaves us with a roster of very few kids that have played in a playoff game and understand how the level of competition steps up in the playoffs.
With a few standout guys on your defense who are some of the ones that you think will shine on offense?
I am extremely pleased with our quarterback development since last season. Both of our quarterbacks have been working hard and are great leaders. I think we have a lot of kids that will touch the ball and they are athletic kids that run well.
How have the player-leaders shown leadership in the past?
Our leadership starts with the two individuals that were voted as team captains last year as juniors (Palmer and O’Neill). We have had a large number of other kids step up during the winter in the weight room and during the summer. I find this team to be a very mature team where the jr and seniors and pushing each other and the sophomores and freshman and working together.
