Shanley

A 2021 State Tournament semi-finalist, Shanley is returning with one of the best quarterbacks in the state and Michael Rostberg may prove to clearly be the best as the season plays out. For that distinction to bear out a few of the possible options will have to fill some figuratively big shoes. If recent history is any indication they will have more next-level guys step up this Fall and could challenge for a spot in the Dome yet again.

But don't just take my word for it, here's what coach Mattern had to say

Before talking about the current team, are there any highlights from last Fall that stand out for you in reflection?

"Making the state semis in the large school class is a big deal for us being such a small school, now we look to take the next step. Aidan DeVine being EDC player of the year was another."

Who are a few of the leading contenders to take over the production from John Gores & Aidan DeVine?

"We are very athletic at the skilled positions, starting with our QB Michael Rostberg, first team all state last year and just signed at D1 St. Thomas. We have a lot of kids back that had good reps last year (Adam Leininger, Jordan Leininger, Joey Dukart, Kaden Christmann, Luke Hollcraft, Sam Osvak, Vucuri Hakim, Jack Haldis)." What would you say are some next steps for QB Michael Rostberg to take?

"Michael had a tremendous offseason, put in the time to take his game to the next level. He put on about 15 lbs of muscle and sees the game much better. We always see growth in our QB's from junior to senior year." Are there position groups that you already have identified as strengths of your roster?

"We will be much more athletic on the defensive side of the ball, especially up front, we are really excited about our front 7."

Is there anything else you would like people to know about your team going into the season? "Our whole roster got to experience success last year in making it to the semis and having multiple chances against a very good Sheyenne team. Our kids now know they belong and can compete with the big schools."

"This will be our strongest team since I have been at Shanley."

"We're playing a statewide schedule, so no more EDC. The statewide schedule is difficult in terms of good teams, each game is a grind and we have to be prepared for each and every game."
