It isn't every season where top-10 teams from two levels of high school football in MInnesota square-off right in the Moorhead area.
Unless you are the DGF Rebels, as they've had two such games now - the first coming against the #1 team in AA, Barnesville.
Undefeated, sitting at #4 in the latest poll and with their Minnesota-bound star Mason Carrier, Detroit Lakes likely thought that they would get to 6-0 and might have thought it would be easy.
Spoiler alert, neither came to pass.
After opening with a 3 & out the Rebel's offense went with the gusting wind to cover 38 yards after getting the ball at the 38. From 24 yards away Caleb Johnson connected with Brody Friend for the touchdown.
The Lakers used their own ground attack to chew up the first of the first quarter and get beyond mid-field but two plays into the second and it was DGF's ball again, this time thanks to a fumble recovery.
Bodey DeVries took most of the hanoffs while Johnson hit Brody O'Keefe to get into the red zone. From 10 yards out it was the quarterback who would finish the drive by himself to make it 14 - 0 nothing after a second successful kick.
The rest of the first half went-off with three punts, a turnover-on-downs and DL running out of time. Perhaps due in part to the frigid wind that continued to whip, the third quarter was four punts to end possessions that were all brief.
The co-op added one more for good measure while the favorites were kept out of the end zone for the duration
D/G/F 21, Detroit Lakes 0
It was a statement victory that the players will be able to think about during many future Saturday's as they watch the standout that they held in check masterfully.
