Hoop Town

Two fairly obvious statements right off the top:

This is a football town, every Friday night, Saturday & Sunday proves that.

Point the second, this is kind of low-hanging fruit because of what just happened this past weekend.

Neither of those facts is going to keep me from digging into this idea.

As for the reference to last weekend, NDSU men's basketball moved into a first place tie with the South Dakota schools while MSUM's men and women each had a great Saturday.

For the Dragons men it came as Gavin Baumgartner propelled them to an 89-60 victory with 29 points, right after being recognized for scoring his 1,000th. West on I94 the women got game-winning points by Park Christian's great Karley Motschenbacher against UMary.

And don't forget about the season that Bison women are having, 14-4 and only chasing the two tournament possible teams.

So it's fair to say that Fargo is also a basketball town.

In case you're wondering, no, it's not just because of the college teams. Most of the players on the rosters are from elsewhere.

At least release there were three high school boys teams from the North Dakota side ranked in the top 5 while Davies girls are #3. If I were to broaden out the consideration, Enderlin has two future D1 bigs, Fergus Falls' Ellie Colbeck is going to join the juggernaut in Brookings while their big-man Chance Fazio will be playing for Moorhead State. Jamestown's Boden Skunberg was making an impact in his true freshman season for the Bison before being sidelined with an injury. Wind back the clock just a bit and you'll remember that Noah Christensen was on his way from Breckenridge to NDSU. Now he'll be at Concordia, playing for his old coach. The list could go on and on and on with players from the area making it to the next level.

Since I mentioned them, the Cobbers haven't been able to do much this season but Tyler Bormann has the makings of a tough team in the not-too-distant future as well.

Point is, even with the Spring football season set to begin on Sunday don't forget that there is more going on in our area than just that. With March beginning two weeks from today the best parts of the basketball season are ahead of us. So try not to become so focused on the perennial champions that you miss out on the special moments that will be happening all across town!
