State title contenders facing each other during the regular season is not abnormal. Less frequent are teams crossing the class division to play but Monday evening featured just such an occasion.
Kindred started the game about as well as can be expected. Their defense held Davies in check while they put a few shots through over the first few minutes. But as the saying goes, the dam broke and it took some time to recover. In this case it came over two minutes of game time during which the Eagles went on a 12-2 tear to gain a seven point advantage.
Davies held that margin til the final minutes, but Abby Duchscherer was on a mission. She almost singularly kept Kindred in the game and with the contributions of a few other shots proved to be enough to not only tie the game but also take the lead.
Davies answered the lead change with two threes to go back up by four. But then, again, Duchscherer showed why she's so highly regarded as she hit a buzzer beater to cut the game to one.
I won't go so far as to say that they flipped a switch during the break, but Davies went full sniper during the final 18 minutes. Started by a Brooklynn Koenig four-point-play 11 seconds into the half, they were lethal from deep. Along with those long balls they got the advantage of the foul bonus early. Those means helped them they reach a 17 point lead, which effectively ended the game.
The Vikings were able to get the gap down to four with time to spare but Davies opened it right back up with seven points in a couple blinks and another rally was not to be.
Davies 78, Kindred 52
Marissa Burian & Koenig each finished with a season-highs. The former had 18 off the bench while the latter finished with 16.
In addition to 23 points, Abby Duchscherer had 15 rebounds. Terryn Johnson also had a double/double, 13 & 12.
