When a team's only loss in the last three years came in the 2017 championship game, every opponent knows it has an uphill battle on its hands. To open the season the challenge fell on Northern Cass to try & spring the upset of the year.
Spoiler alert, their chance to get the signature win had evaporated before the first quarter was done.
The Cardinals scored their first 20 points on offense in less than 6 minutes of game time. 64 seconds later Grant Romfo tacked on a pick-six to push the lead to 26-0. That score held for the rest of the quarter but a pair of interceptions that were wrangled in the first 14 seconds of the second quarter (one of which is in the game gallery) pushed it to a 33-0 difference.
The Jaguars responded with a 53-yard touchdown by their best player, Kolby VanderWal but even then, Langdon blocked the extra point. The momentum swing was short-lived as the Cardinals reeled off 20 more points.
Even with that commanding, insurmountable lead the reigning champs kept throwing the ball. I'm not against scores being run-up. If one team is drastically superior then it's not their responsibility to not score. But there is such a thing as sports decorum on the fully amateur levels which should be the guiding principle.
Fast forward to the second half and the clock was running from the outset. The Jags took the reopening possession the length of the field for eight points to win the fast-moving third. L/E/M capped the day's scoring with one more touchdown in the fourth.
L/E/M 59, N Cass 14
