While the final scores haven't gone their away against several of the best teams in Class B, Oak Grove has competed up to the level of those opponents in the lead up to the latest contest against a ranked team. Touting the Romfo twins fresh off their signatures to play Football at NDSU & UND, the Cardinals are fifth in the state with only two losses.
A quick, 10 - 0 start by L/E/M was snapped by Cody Card. Over the middle two minutes of the first quarter they kept it going to the tune of a 12-7 run. The Cardinals answered with four more quick points, after which the teams traded buckets - capped by a Trevon Rodriguez buzzer-beater.
The difference remained seven, 37-30 a few minutes into the second quarter. Both Simon & Grant Romfo were already in double figures with 10 & 14 respectively. Over the minutes that remained L/E/M was only able to slightly extend it's lead, 48-37 into the break.
A 4-0 spurt out of the break gave the Cardinals their largest lead of the game. They held onto the double-digit advantage until a 12-4 run early in the fourth quarter by the Grovers got it back down to eight, with the big shot this time coming from Rylee Bakkegard. With two minutes to go in the game, Bakkegard got his team one point closer. Then, with less than a minute to go Noah Swenson & Rodriguez cut it to four with consecutive layups, the second coming after a steal. Those four quick points came after Simon Romfo only hit one of two from the line. But then he found himself back at the charity stripe and he sank both shots to put the upset out of reach.
L/E/M 88, Oak Grove 82
Simon Romfo finished with a game-high 25 while Grant had 21. Jagger Worley was third with 13 while Carter Tetrault had 11. Marcus Kingzett & Gage Goodman rounded out the offense with nine each.
Oak Grove finished with nine players in the book, lead by Noah Swenson's 21. He was joined in double-figures by Bakkegard (13) & Rodriguez (11).
