The team finished September in much the same way that the rest of it had gone - dominantly.
Now, with two more weeks to tune up before the in-state rivalry game the focus becomes about finding the areas that can improved upon & doing so.
But first things first, here's the talk about the Towson W
Quincy Patterson didn't have a flawless performance but still should have been 7 of 10 passing with a score & no interceptions. But Christian Watson had another head-scratching drop & Patterson did make the decision to attempt the toss into double-coverage. Even with those two plays he had a good day. His hand-cannon makes throws to every part of the field a possibility but his best throw of the day took more than the howitzer.
In complimentary fashion, Dom Gonnella & TaMerik Williams combined for more than half of the 339 yards on the ground that the backs racked up. Of the rest, Jalen Bussey finished with nearly a third so the backfield has depth & upside that most other school's can only dream of fielding.
Which also includes the touchdown Hunter.
Luepke finished with three touches but turned that meager opportunity into 66 total yards & a rushing score. It's quite a luxury to have one of the most prolific high school touchdown scorers that will be but to barely have to use him.
Even if all the pieces on offense happen to have an off day the same weekend, the defense is proving to be good enough to win. They were limited to the safety, but they didn't need to score more than that with the way that they smothered the home offense. Eight tackles for loss (including five sacks) are the single-greatest reason Towson was held to 200 total yards. Maybe in a tighter game one of the forced fumbles or pass break ups would have finished as a full-fledged turnover & not just dispiriting plays.
But it wasn't all sunshine & rainbows in Maryland.
As previously mentioned, Christian Watson had another foible on the field. The closest thing to a good explanation for it is that on the spectrum of receivers he's the anti-RJ Urzendowski, better known as RJ Stickem. Though he never got a sniff by the pros or the well known senior showcase game, he was as dependable an option as we'll ever see. Watson has the physical talent that any player would wish for but going back years he's shown the inconsistency that was displayed again today.
The specialists have not been asked to do much yet this year, which could explain some of the issues that popped up today. The missed 48 yard attempt is understandable, I mean, how often have we seen veteran pros miss that kick in domed stadiums - hint, too much. Of more concern is the botched snap on the extra point attempt & Kaedin Steindorf being limited to 40 yards on all of his punts. With the goal being Texas & the trophy it's those sorts of things that can spoil a bid, so they can't be overlooked just because the overall product was special again.
See you in two weeks!
