There has already been plenty of talk about the interaction between the coach & quarterback as the game ended. At best it's an awkward interaction but requires some follow up questions which will likely be asked in the days to come.
A week that began with Bruce Anderson rejoining the ranks of the professionals got better from there!
There was a Thursday night hiccup as Denver swept at the Fieldhouse and it wasn't much better Saturday when Omaha won 3 - 1.
⚽️ ended homecoming week with a 2 - 1 win over the Birdies when Alicia Nead scored in the final 40 seconds!
As for the main event of the weekend, 🏈 took care of Northern Iowa as they so often have.
The weekend rush began with the men (4th) & women (3rd) in Jamestown to go against conference & regional college runners.
⚽️ was further West but lost to Mary 2 - 1. They stayed in that region for a Sunday afternoon in Minot but again finished behind, 1 - 0.
🏐 took to the highway South only to run into buzzsaws in Sioux Falls & Wayne, Nebraska, 3 - 0 defeats.
🏈 managed to avoid a total weekend failure, riding a 29 point wave that they scored in the first 18 minutes to victory by 12.
The Corn Cobs added to their bundle to start the week when former Fargo North softball coach Scott Carter joined the school's staff. A little later Monday it was announced that West Fargo alum Telvin Vah was named Conference ⚽️ Player of the Week after his four goal week. In so doing he became the leader in goals & points scored.
Next evening 🏐 put together one of their best performances of the season against Crown. They returned to the court Friday/Saturday against Scholastica & Macalester but lost 3 - 0 & 3 - 1.
🏈 also hooked the Mac, winning 34 - 27 thanks in large part to a 24-point second half. For the first time this season Terry Horan's team put together a mammoth workload on the ground (50 rushes & 289 yards).
With the season drawing ever nearer, Minnesota had the first two of it's preseason games this week against New Orleans & Denver. In both they followed a script of having the starters play early and closing out with the guys who are fighting to fill-out the back-half of the roster. In the first game the depth players lost a 20 point halftime lead but showed enough grit to get the win. They doubled-down on that Friday by winning the fourth quarter to force overtime then finishing it off. There's been a noticeable increase in their defensive intensity, against teams that have played their best guys even less than Minnesota. It's an encouraging sign but caution is recommended in forming any conclusions about their defense, yet.
Before the first puck drop of the season the roster got a small tweak in the form of a trade with Muskegon. They added forward Thomas Sinclair for Jake Braccini.
Then came the home opener Saturday, a one-off against Sioux City. The League runners up jumped out to a 2 - 0 lead after the first period but early in the third Sioux City drew even, for a few minutes. A little more than five minutes into the final frame Andre Gasseau got his second of the day to retake the lead. That last for just over seven minutes, at which points it was tied yet again 3 - 3. With time running short the Los Angeles native showed his star power to secure the win!
The season grind really gets going against Lincoln at home Friday evening.
Reminder that scores are added daily, so check back often.
But now for the highlights
It was a week full of great accomplishments, which began with Davies sophomore Lexi Bartley sinking a birdie to end a five-hole playoff to take the state title from Bismarck Century's three-time champion Hannah Herbel. That should make for some exciting competition next Fall!
Across the river Moorhead's Katryna Hanson played her way to a runner-up finish in 8AA North singles 🎾 tournament. With the placement she earned a spot in the finals, to be held Saturday in Sartell. The Taters cross country also represented well in Perham as the girls had a third-place showing while Isaac Martel had the third best individual effort for the guys, who collectively finished a couple spots lower.
Down the road, in Jamestown, the state ⚽️ tournament got underway. All four of the East schools advanced out of the first round, punctuated by 4 - 0 shutouts by Davies & Sheyenne. Now with double the bragging rights on the line Shanley & Davies each snuck by Red River & Sheyenne by a single score. Sheyenne paid that forward in the third place game, winning 1 - 0 while the championship was scoreless through two overtimes. It wasn't until the 10th round of the shootout that the victor was determined, Davies for the second time in the week! Not surprisingly their coach, Ian Costello, was named Coach of the Year.
During much of the same time more than a dozen school's came together for the Metro 🏐 Invitational. Instead of doing an entire graphic with just those results you can see them through the link.
The Fargos also had some 🎾 success in Grand Forks. Davies Jake McCormick took fifth place, Sheyenne's Ethan Raan was third & Shanley's Kai Pierce was second. It was a different story in the doubles portion of the tournament but for their successes the three were among the 15 All-State players.
Which just leaves Friday under the lights. Park Christian & Shanley both steamrolled their opponents while West Fargo had another 42 point evening. For their part, Davies "only" won by 26. On the outskirts Kindred & Hillsboro each also won going away. It took most of the game but D/G/F affirmed their state ranking with a shutout win against Hawley. During Central Cass's win over Linton/H/M/B Jake Deutsch scored his 12th touchdown, a new single-season school record.
Along with all that came a flurry of recruiting news over the last week
