The Week That Was

Following his record-setting game-winner Greg Joseph was named the Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week.

The first game of the new year wiped all the good feelings away as all three phases failed as miserably as they have at any point this season. The impact of the flop was compounded as San Francisco survived Vegas' upset bid, moving them into the second spot in the conference ahead of the regular season finale. With just seeding to play for & the odds of a move back up very slim it should be a reserve-heavy game in Chicago.

This has quickly become the definition of backing into the playoffs but they will have to spend the next two weeks trying to make the sour grapes into some sort of consumable wine.

With less than two weeks til kickoff of the biggest game yet between the four-letter Dakota U's the accolades continued to come in for the Herd's finest.

The final weekend of the year brought the season's first North Dakota games with NDSU taking care of the Birds both times!

Jan 1 had 🤼 in Chattanooga for the first of two days and they finished it fourth on the leaderboard.

Moorhead State's men's & women's 🏀 teams spent the weekend in St. Cloud & Duluth. The first game finished as an 18-point loss while the guys got their 10th victory of the season as four of the six scorers hit 14+ points. On the Lake shore the women limited the 25th-ranked Bulldogs to 60 points but were only able to get 45 themselves. The men made it eight wins in a row with a more balanced offense by win by 14.

The Cobber's 🏀 seasons continued with a trip to Vegas. The men opened the tournament against NJ-based Ramapo but unlikely Rambo, they couldn't do the super-human & the Corn's 51-point second half proved the difference in the contest. They couldn't recreate the same effectiveness in the second game, a 16-point loss to WI-Platteville.

The women's first game proved to be one of the best the program has had, beating sixth-ranked Amherst in double-OT as Makayla Anderson went for 23 & 13! They were able to carry that forward into the second game, a 40-point win over Salve Regina (R.I.) as five members finished with at least eight points & they collected 13 steals!

They also got the zamboni back into action for the first time in nearly a month with a trip to Geneva, Ill. for a pair against Aurora. They showed no ill-effects of the layoff in game one, a 4 - 1 win but may have had tired legs in the rematch, a 3 - 2 loss.

The Bolts skated into the final days of the month on a three game winning streak and the chance to double it in a home-stand against Des Moines. Not only did they stretch it to six & cushion their advantage over Lincoln they put some style-points on their performances, scoring 6, 4 & 6 against just five total goals, finishing with a shutout on NYE! If they can carry the same level effectiveness into the remaining months of competition then the West will not be the only thing they win!

Reminder that scores and recruiting news are updated regularly so check back often!

Now for this week's highlights

Moorhead's girls 🏒 went on the road to whip Wayzata 5 - 1. Their 🏀 teams then hosted a holiday tournament, with the boys beating D/G/F & Detroit Lakes en route to the trophy.

Just before the second Holiday break Brenna Dick set a school record with 34 points against Shanley, surpassing Jadyn Feist's 2021 33-point performance

Thursday Oak Grove managed to beat 9th-ranked Hillsboro/CV 72 - 71 as Treyton Hatfield & Rylee Bakkegard combined for 48 points.

Both of Park Christian's teams went to the Cities for an event at Legacy Christian. After getting routed Tuesday the boys bounced back with a 32-point win over Nashwauk. Their girls took care of both games at the event, winning by 51 & 29.

Central Cass also got a big win by their boys in New Rockford & then again in Lisbon by 35.

Wednesday also included a win by Thompson over #3 Bishop Ryan in a thriller! Further North, Richland delivered a different sort of statement, beating Benson County by 32. Their girls started the week with a 71-point bludgeoning of Hillsboro (another example of a game that the three-class wouldn't prevent).

Horace's girls also picked up their first varsity victory, beating Pierz in St. Cloud!

In their one game Davies boys squeaked out a one-point win over Red River as Mason Klabo had another 33-point performance!

On the ice South/Shanley had 6 - 1 & 10 - 0 wins in Rochester. North also put up a football score, netting eight against one by Crookston. Davies boys out-did them all, beating Devils Lake 11 - 1! West Fargo's girls went blade-to-blade with Grand Forks, forcing the action until the shoot-out, which they were also able to prevail!

That's the week in a nut-shell!
