FEATURED

28-5

There have been some moderate highs over the last seven seasons but none of the lows are as low as today's loss. Then the coach talks about fighting for wins. It's the mentality that screwed up last season and has them right back in the position to win just enough games to wreck the chance at the best players but will bare little else.

He should be fired and so should everyone who can't see the big picture.

Cousins hasn't been the main problem this season, not even on the top 10 but flipping him for whatever picks he could be traded for is another very logical step. Then use all the selections toward defense & the OL. In a division that only has one other competent team a bounce back can happen rather quickly.

But will only happen if changes are made.

That's the lesson from today. We'll see if the Wilfs got the message.

The week started with the 🏀 teams facing major conference opponents in Manhattan, Kansas & Omaha, each finishing down more than 20 points. The men rebounded Thursday night against a thoroughly overmatched Northland College squad by putting up the seventh best offensive day in school history. In the win Rocky Kreuser set a school record for games played with his 133rd. So long as he stays healthy the rest of the way he'll set a practically unbreakable mark. The women got back on track Saturday night with a come-from-behind win against Bradley as Ryan Cobbins went off.

A day earlier 🏃 held their Alumni Classic, with several names of the past & present shining again on both the men & women sides.

The week concluded with 🤼 in Sioux Falls as they slammed Augustana.

That left the second round route of Southern Illinois. With the win they secured a spot against East Tennessee, a game which will get the national broadcast on Saturday.

Outside the lines the week began with Quincy Patterson, TaMerik Williams, Loshiaka Roques & Marques Sigle being named to the All-Newcomer team. As the starter to begin the year & with the impact Williams made as the season progressed those two are not extremely surprising but Roques & Sigle must have impressed the opposing head coaches much more than anyone would have guessed. Bodes well for the future!

Those players will be among the first to benefit from the practice facility, which this week got a $15,000,000 commitment toward it's completion. The messaging to recruits won't change but can get better & better as the crown continues to add gems such as the facility will be.

It was another brief week of action for Moorhead State.

🏀 got it started with a pair of losses in Bismarck. During the men's game Bryce Irsfeld knocked down his 1,000th point, the 36th such player to do so. With most of two seasons left he'll have a great opportunity to finish much higher than 36. The teams were back on the court against Minot. The men finished behind again while the women got their second win of the season in convincing fashion.

🏃 men were picked to finish fifth in the conference while the women got a 12th place prediction. They put that to the test at NDSU and had some national qualifier performances.

At the same time 🏊 hit the water in Rochester with their own good results.

The week wrapped up with 🤼 in their namesake event.

Outside the lines over three dozen of their athletes were included on conference All-Academic lists. It was also announced that Bob Jones is the non-interim head 🏐 coach.

With eligibility remaining West Fargo's Telvin Vah continues to add to his resume. The latest piece is All-Region inclusion for the first time in more than a decade. With the eyes that he opened this year he may get an opportunity at a higher level institution or may go down as one of the best to ever do it at Concordia. That's a no-lose opportunity.

The week got better at NDSU as freshman Tommy Kern re-set the record in the 400 by more than a quarter of a second.

From there Abbey Hardwick took over with a hat trick against Augsburg in the opener of the pair. In the rematch the adjustments that Auggie made proved superior to Concordia's. On the men's side it was the reverse as game one went Augsburg's way but the second finished in favor of the home team.

Saturday continued with a pair of basket games that showed progress but ultimately finished as losses against St. John's & St. Benedict.

In the last event of 2021 at the pool Concordia came through with some top finishes.

The week concluded with a trip a few blocks East to hit the mat.

Minnesota lost two of it's three games this week but in so doing still managed to show that they have a different nature than previous iterations. Could it still be a flash in the pan? Of course. But this flash seems different from any in recent vintage so optimism could be rewarded with a playoff berth.

A rare bit of December news crossed the wire, even with the lock-out going into effect this week. A couple historic figures finally made the hall of fame - Jim Kaat & Tony Oliva. Each far predate the internet & many other things but bare the distinction of known greatness when mentioned. That speaks volumes so it's great that they will be formally included among the best to play the game!

The Bolts began the week with another loss but then bounced back with a win in which they never trailed. Des Moines tied it up twice but Kyle Smolen's third of the year proved to be the game winner as Anton Castro held the net for the entire final period.

Reminder that scores are added daily, so check back often.

But now for the highlights

The week began with preseason polls for all three of the beginners. It came as no surprise that Class B girls and Class A boys & girls were all well represented by regional schools.

Then the contests commenced

Davies 🤼 put a smack-down on Hillsboro Tuesday. They kept it rolling Saturday with a top finish of 14 teams in Jamestown. Sheyenne showed that they may challenge the Eagles in another sport as they had a podium finish out of 11 down by Chahinkapa.

On the ice Moorhead's girls took it to East GF with a 39-shot evening while holding the Wave to just 16. Their boys had their own good evening Friday against Andover. Across the River West Fargo's boys put a snow man on Grafton while the girls had their own showing against Dickinson. The Davies girls also put it on Bismarck Saturday afternoon.

On the court, as the games began the previews drew near their end. From Northern Cass to Moorhead, Hawley, North & Davies, it was a loaded week and there's only one left. On opening night N & C Cass, Oak Grove & Kindred cleaned up. Central & Kindred doubled down on their great starts with many more lopsided wins yet to come! A got into Friday with a route of Oak Grove by South while Richland doubled up Hillsboro. On the boys side, North & Sheyenne pretty well picked up where they left off last season against Legacy & Mandan. For the Mustangs Michael Nhial had 26 to lead the way.

But the biggest news came Thursday when the Minnesota HS league finally approved the use of shot clocks beginning two years from now with stipulations that it can be added sooner. It's a long time coming but assures that the game will get even better!

And as always, keep up with the stream of recruiting news!
