The Week That Was

The calm before the Draft storm continues to build. That leaves a lot of room for speculation and mock drafting but there isn't much else to say about the team at this moment.

While weather wreaked havoc with the local sports calendar NDSU's ⛳️ teams avoided the issues with time to the South. The women were seventh best out of 10 teams in Oklahoma while the men outshot all eight of the would-be winners in Nebraska to start the week!

The teams also escaped the snow with a trip to the "Golden" State. Trevor Otterdahl & Amy Philips lead the way Thursday with success on the track by both the men & women following on Friday. Amanda Anderson saved the best for last but was not alone with success on the closing day!

Closer to home, the diamond in Omaha was the spot for six games Friday/Saturday with the only loss coming in the second of three by the guys. They will stay in corn territory for a mid-week date against Nebraska and then ORU for the weekend.

Beyond the lines, Jory Collins lost his second assistant coach this offseason as the SHAC Shakeup continues.

In more positive news, seven seniors were recognized for their academic achievement. That went along with the announcement that their final Spring practice would be held this coming Saturday, open to the public.

On the other side of the state ⛳️ had a second place showing to start the week. They finished it with a fifth place performance in Sioux Falls.

In-between came four days in the California sun, which wasn't the only thing that shined! Adnew Stueven was just outside the top 20 in the steeplechase, which was still good enough for a new school record. Braxton Bruer & Payton Lane also showed well on the track. Nadir Yusuf also had a national qualifying time in the 10,000 meter. Shyrone Kemp also showed out in the triple jump and he wasn't the only jumper to do so!

Softball also got some swings in but was only able to win one of their four.

Prior to the slew of scheduling updates both of the diamonds saw action. Softball had chances to dethrone Bethel twice but even with Megan Gavin spinning excellently each game finished as a loss for the Cobbers. It was an entirely different story for the guys as Hamline lead for one-half of an inning over the two games!

Beyond the lines, 🤼 was recognized for it's academic achievement.

The start of the future began with a well-deserved contract extension for Chris Finch. That set the tone for the subsequent competitions and Minnesota did not stop partying. The fourth quarter comeback against the Cutters prompted the postgame celebration that was the talk of 🏀 media. The team wasn't content to just have that win as they went nearly wire-to-wire to win game 1 over Memphis. Even with the 13-point margin of victory their defensive effectiveness took a step back from one game to the next. Ja Morant will do that but the drop off shows yet again where Minnesota's improvement can happen. On the other hand, it would be hard for anyone to do better than Anthony Edwards in his true playoff debut. He is the fourth youngest in Association history to score 30 points and his 36 was just a few behind Magic Johnson for the most ever by a 20 year old. Not surprisingly it was the most in franchise history by a guy in his first opportunity - SPECIAL!

We'll find out Tuesday what he can muster as an encore!

The Pair began the week with a win over the Puget South squad. They dropped four of the next five games and had the first physical issue of the season for Byron Buxton on what was an innocuous play at second base. Word is that he didn't suffer any serious issue and will only miss a week or so, but don't be surprised if it lingers and/or the team is extra cautious with him because of his long history. In any case, the team has so far done nothing to show that they are even a little better than last year so monitor at your own discretion but keep your expectations low.

Having already secured their spot in postseason, the Bolts had themselves a party this weekend! Down 1 - 0 mid-way through the first period, the team reeled-off nine scores while holding Lincoln to four. Bret Link & Felikss Gavars were the only repeat scorers with two each. The rematch didn't have as many fireworks but came down to a shootout with Link coming through in the clutch to secure the outcome again.

Those came after the boss received a contract extension, which just adds to the party theme!

No transactions this week but single game tickets did go on sale, which is a considerable step toward the season's start.

Reminder that scores are added daily plus there's a new home for recruiting news, so check back often!

Now for this week's highlights, few though there may be this time

Fargo South's girls can boast the lone contest Best as they hung 15 runs on Central to earn an 11-score victory.

Even more improbable is the news that broke from Kindred as Paul Olson got a 🏃 scholarship after his first two meets! That is a quintessential meteoric rise for the senior athlete!

The Club announced several more members of it's men's team this week.
