The Week That Was

We've reached draft month but are no closer to more picks, a higher pick or knowing which direction the team is likely once they're on the clock. There's some frustration from all that but it also keeps it interesting.

What we did learn this week are details in the contracts of CJ Ham, Jonathan Bullard & Brandon Powell. They're roll-players and the contracts reflect that but each could be well exceeded when they get back on the field at Vikesborg.

Both of the Diamond squads started the week with Player of the Week recognitions. For Softball it was Carley Goetschius while Cade Feeney represented from the Men's mound. ⚾️ proceeded to drop a single to Nebraska, split with SDSU Friday & take the series Saturday. The ladies lost a close one to Western Saturday before sweeping Sunday to claim the series.

Prior to much of that, women's finished in the top half of a 16-team field at the Golfweek Invite in South Carolina.

The men's & women's 🏃 teams also split up between four locations across the Southwest for a weekend of competitions.

On top of that, 🏈 had it's schedule finalized & tickets for the season opener at the Purple Palace went on sale! Eight members of the program took part in the annual showcase with Hunter Luepke stealing the show with the numbers he posted. Along with the Pro Day came the prognostications of where each could be in July.

It was a light week for the Fire-breathers that began with softball taking two in Aberdeen. and sweeping another set in Crookston with six runs each game Sunday.

In-between 🎾 took Crookston 6 -1 and then shutout Bemidji State to end the week.

Postponement was the word of the week on the Farm as baseball & softball each got stung, with the latter managing to get two in against Morris before the weekend of inactivity. ⚾️ still took a loss as Chris Coste announced that this will be his final season as the head coach. No word on whether the same will be true with his Summer job.

Both teams were also in action as the weekend transitioned to the next, with Carleton & St. Scholastica taking care of the guys while SS narrowly edged the women.

Just when it seemed as though they were rounding into playoff form they laid three eggs. Phoenix & the Lakeless are justifiable considering the pedigree of the players each organization has but then they let a D-League Portland squad also best them to end the week and more than likely their chance at top-6. It was a relegation-level loss and should be the final straw toward Tim Connelly making more moves when the offseason sets in, likely sooner than later.

As if it weren't bad enough they also lost Naz Reid to a broken wrist. With what he put on tape all season he will be in line for a nice pay day but the team that found him and helped him get to that point won't be able to reap the best from his level of play, which is par for the course of the franchise's history.

As the Dogs of Winter fade the Boys of Summer came roaring into the season. Okay, maybe not, as they only scored two runs per in their first two goes. With each finishing as a shutout of KC it made team history and set-up Sunday to be a broom-day which Joey Gallo practically won by himself (3/4, 2 HR, 4 RBI)! It was a promising start and now they get Luis Arraez for a triple. A 5-1 or 6-0 start to the year would be nothing to complain about, even if the bats only do as much as they did through the first two.

The Bolts continued their recent swoon with their fifth-straight loss Friday against Sioux City. A day later and on their ice they were able to maintain the quality goal-tending that they've had for most of the season while the offense nailed four shots to snap the streak and keep 40 wins within reach. The struggle-bus also continued for Waterloo, who has seen their lead on second place evaporate while Fargo's cushion above them remains at nine points. All four of the top teams in the division are locked-in for the playoffs so it remains to be seen how the organizations handle their player usage over the final three weekends of the regular.

Reminder that scores and recruiting news are updated regularly so check back often!

College info was the most abundant over the last six days but West Fargo's Troy Miller stepped-down from his position as head boys 🏒 coach. Kindred will also be in search of a new AD & head coach as Matt Crane accepted the AD position with Bismarck High.

That's the week in a nut-shell!
