The Week That Was

It may be May but it was a busy week for the Purple! In addition to the announcement of the Skoldule they signed six of their draft picks as well as held their rookie mini-camp. As yet none of the unsigned participants have been added to the roster though that could change at any moment. One note about Lewis Cine's contract is that the fourth year is fully guaranteed, setting up for all of the first round players to get the same assurance for the first time in the League's history.

NDSU's week began with the unsurprising announcement that Quincy Patterson is going to give it a go elsewhere next Fall. He never gave any public indication that he would be leaving but with Cam Miller atop the depth chart & Cole Payton waiting in the wings there was going to be an odd-man in the group. Patterson leaving clarifies that while simultaneously leaving the team on shakier ground. Perhaps Payton would be good to go in the event of a Miller injury but seeing Peter Anderson this Fall is not a preferable possibility.

The 🏀 teams also made some waves this week. First with a recognition for one of the former standouts then by adding a few new faces to the rosters.

The week also included the softball team's abbreviated postseason. They won their first game, eliminating UND and then shutout Omaha Friday for Darren Mueller's 700th win as the head coach but lost twice Saturday to end their run. They defied the odds in beating Omaha with just the third win of the season when Emilee Buringa was hitless, 11 losses.

Thursday also included the beginning of the League T & F Championships. The women swept the events while the mean took two pieces of hardware. Successes continued accruing Friday, setting up the final pushes to the titles. The men secured #12 while the women were a close second.

The week ended on a high-note as ⚾️ took Friday - Saturday & Sunday in their pursuit of the regular season championship. With one series remaining and a two-loss cushion on ORU they would have to completely meltdown to not get the one seed in Tulsa!

It was a light week for Moorhead State but they made the most of their chances with three titles on day one and even more Saturday! They will put a bow on the year in Allendale, MI next week.

Before the handful of contests began Jake Peters was named honorable mention for the all-conference 🎾 team.

Then came the ⚾️. Bethel overcame three errors for a 7 - 0 win. In the elimination game St. John's was behind 3 - 1 going into the sixth inning but rattled off five runs the rest of the way to end the season.

The next turn came in Winona as runners & throwers gave it their best effort, with Concordia have high finishers across several events.

After getting their first sweep of the season the Replicas turned right around and were swept by Houston with only three runs scored over three games. The Central has the chance to be a great slump-buster all year and Minnesota capitalized on that, taking two of three off Cleveland this weekend. The cherry on top may have been Royce Lewis going yard for the first time with the bases loaded!

It's early in the offseason but the Bolts got some good news about a former member of the team. Nate Schmidt was named an alternate captain for the national team May 11!

The Birds began their season north of the Border. After winning both of their final exhibitions against Winnipeg they won the regular season opener 10 - 9 after falling behind 6 - 1 after two innings. Winnipeg repeated the feat Saturday but Fargo rallied again. It came down to the final innings but a 2-0 start to the campaign was not to be, setting up a rubber-match Sunday afternoon. A three-homer afternoon keyed them to a 9 - 7 win, holding there average at triplicate for the young season. If they can maintain or improve upon that then Newman will be the place to be this Summer!

Reminder that scores are added daily plus there's a new home for recruiting news, so check back often!

Now for this week's highlights

The second week of May was also full of activity. Monday: Davies girls 🎾 got a shutout win against Red River. On the pitch Shanley continued their winning ways without a 2 - 0 victory over North while West Fargo did the same over Central as they pursue a top-four finish in the East.

Tuesday: Davies nearly repeated the outcome against North, losing one of the nine while Shanley & Sheyenne pick up 7 - 2 victories. Moorhead had the best team showing in Park Rapids, two strokes better than Sartell. Davies girls ⚽️ scored a touchdown against South while holding onto the donut on the other end. The Bruins & Mustangs each had 11-run win on the fastpitch while North added an 8 - 1 win on the ⚾️ field. D/G/F added a 10 - 0 win over Hawley to their record during a five-game winning streak. In addition to that, both of Moorhead's 🏃 teams finished second at the section meet.

A rare Wednesday afternoon doubleheader between Sheyenne & Shanley finished as a split. Landon Meier & Sam Ovsak combined for a no-hitter in the second game. That evening the Deacons served up a 7 - 2 win on West Fargo.

Thursday: Enderlin got three runs and a winning pitching performance from Carson Bartholomay as they earned their first region win in two years. Closer to home Sheyenne beat Davies 12 - 2 amidst a litany of postponements. Ada/Borup added a 10 - 0 VS Kittson County to the list.

Friday included the E/W crossover but the Mustangs were the only ones to run down wins. They then hosted nine mini tournaments Saturday, adding to their win totals. The Enderlin girls then managed to bounce back from a 23 - 2 trouncing by Northern Cass for their first win in two years, 9 - 3. The energy extended back to the Eagles nest as M/P/C/G beat Maple River 26 - 0 in Enderlin. With Barnesville playing the role of substitute for Sheyenne, Moorhead added a 12 - 0 win to the week. While the date changes continued, WFS got another one in, beating Red River 9 - 2. was a different story as only one game was hit by the 13th but West Fargo managed to be a nightmare for Devils Lake, 11 - 4.

The final day of the week had another large-scale meet, this time in Casselton, and included many more sterling performances from local competitors. There were also several duels on the diamonds as four games with unique teams had each team score at least nine runs - good things happen when it's sunny & at least sort-of warm! Hawley didn't match the level of offensive output when they stepped up against Rogers but were able to pull-out the win 4 - 3.

The last full week of Class B ⚾️ also included the Cass County schools continuing to separate themselves in Region 1. Central did so with a shutout W versus Kindred/Richland and a pair of low-score wins over Kindred while Northern had a 10 - 0 afternoon against the Hankinson Co-op. NC kept it going with 2 - 1 wins over Oakes & Kindred (as well as a 5 - 1) and 13 - 4 & 9 - 2 on Enderlin.

Central Cass got a whale of a week from Peyton Nelson as she hit three multi-run home runs as they blasted Enderlin & Hankinson while also getting a one-run win against West Fargo. As if that wasn't enough, Nelson also threw a complete game against the Pirates. Prior to that Hankinson put together a 10 - 1 performance against Hillsboro with Kya Mauch putting a pair of pitches over the fence while Kirstan Loewen struck out 10.

Team Taters was back on the course in Detroit Lakes Friday/Saturday and got a pair of top 10 performances from sophomore Joey Simonich & junior Joe Kortan. On the Lax field Moorhead's boys stomped Brainerd while the girls got a pair of double-digit Ws Friday/Saturday over St. Cloud & Proctor/Hermantown.

The week also included updates to the A & B softball polls.

The club dropped it's second game of the season, 4 - 1 Saturday in St. Louis Park.
