Plenty of noteworthy sporting developments from the past week but as we come into the heart of grad season, nothing is more deserving of leading off!
Leading off the list of accoladed, NDSU had 12 more of their competitors recognized this week. From the men's Track team: Elliott Stone, Tony Ukkelberg, Alex Talley, Trevor Otterdahl, Benji Phillips & Jacob Rodin; from the women's team: Shelby Gunnells, Paige Harris, Annika Rotvold, Amanda Anderson & Kelby Anderson; and from the men's ️⛳️ Andrew Israelson were all named Academic All-League.
The men's 🏀 also made some more news with the announcement of a few foes next Winter, the University of Illinois, Chicago will visit the SHAC while the team will travel to Youngstown as their portion of the Horizon/Summit challenge. News also broke that the team will be traveling to LA to face the Bruins. There will be more schools added to the list as they look to go three-in-a-row as conference champs led by their recently announced captains - Sam Griesel, Tyree Eady & Rocky Kreuser - but that's a good start to the non-con!
The accolades kept rolling across the river as Moorhead State had a pair of their athletes recognized for accomplishments in the classroom. Ethan Gerbig (🏈 ) and Megan Hintz (🏀 ) were each apart of the conference honor students list.
This week was another big one for the Cornies as men's 🏀 announced a seven-man recruiting class. From the state-tournament-bound Henning Hornets they added Isaac Fisher and Charlie Rasmussen is coming from Perham, to go along with the previously announced Talon Hoffer and four from the Twin Cities sphere.
Away from the court, it was announced that Matt Bye, Josie Herrmann & Jesse Middendorf were amongst this year's NCAA Indoor All-Americans. Bye & Middendorf are the first for Concordia since 1996 and only the third & fourth all-time while Herrmann was the fourth such achiever since 2010.
The first tangible evidence toward Minnesota's 🏀 team coming back happened this week as the practice facility reopened. It's still anyone's guess how the season will revive but the leader in the clubhouse seems to be it happening at the House of Mouse, with specific details still very much in limbo. So it's possible that the Howl won't even play again this year but for the sake of Russell & Towns hitting the court together before the modified offseason, I'd rather it not go that way!
This week also included the announcement of the 2020 ⚾️ player of the year in North Dakota. Hailing from the Southside of Fargo and bound for Columbia, Cole Hage added some more hardware to his already successful high school career.
Fargo has announced some of the next steps as they look to reload but they took a step back from future vision, revisiting their championship on Monday with a Q & A.
