FEATURED

6-13

Beginning a theme of post-season recognitions, Bennett Hostetler was named to the All-Region team after hitting .455 with 2 HRs & 4 RBIs as well stalwart defense at short. Young Cade Feeney also received some well-earned acknowledgement as a Freshman All-American. He's the third to ever make the list, so you could say he got one more strikeout this year 😏 .

Which set the stage for the track & field crew to do their things at nationals

West Fargo's own Alex Talley got the party started with a sixth-place hammer throw, good enough for first-team All-American! Maddy Nilles followed suit with her own best throw of the hammer. Akealy Moton used a break in the shot putting to have the 13th best Javelin & second-team All-American. Kari Wolfe added to the school's recent legacy with the spear, finishing in fifth place, which also earned her A-A! Back with the rock, Moton had the second-best finish at nationals of any Bison women yet, a school record throw that put her atop the standings briefly and in 3rd when the event was over. Just outside the top 10 Shelby Gunnels also showed up with the shot to close out her career with a second-team All-American honor as well.

Track & field doesn't get the fanfare of many other sports but they've got a machine that's on par with every other member of the school's athletics department!

Another week went by and the list of accolades for Bolts players got even longer. Nick Strom was named the Community Service Award recipient for raising more than $10,000 to benefit Matt Cullen's foundation, among other endeavors!

The Birds started the week slow, losing 3 of 4 against Milwaukee but rebounded to win three in a row over Cleburne, all in a different manner. The first was a five-homer, 15-run explosion. Five of the runs & two of the shots came off the bat of Correlle Prime. That one was followed by a 2-1 win in 10 innings, capped by a dribbling single from Alex Boxwell which drove in the rookie darling of the team, Will Zimmerman. They completed the sweep on Sunday afternoon, 6-3. Won't get too many times where the sweep game was the least exciting but here we are!

Beyond the on-field action, the newly-crowned strike-king was added to St. Louis' organization. Persistence does payoff! Then, just today, the team added lefty Mark Finkelnburg & infielder Tyler Kelly. With as hot as some of the current guys have been those will likely not be the last transactions made by the team this season, which is saying a lot because they're lost some great ones already!

The week began with a multi-time state champion continue his Olympic dream! The Fargo fish, Eric Anderson, had a pair of personal-best performances early in the week, in the 50m freestyle, to qualify for the next round of Olympic trials. 🏊 is about as niche of a sport as there is but to get a world-class-caliber competitor from the land of ice & snow deserves lead position!

But niche sports are kind of the prep-scene theme from the last week

Monday evening the Moorhead boys lacrosse traveled to St. Michael for a section semi-final and returned with a 9-5 win. That set-up a championship match with Buffalo who had also sprung an upset in the semis, 17-12 over Elk River. Highlighted by some nasty stick-work they left Buffalo with the trophy and will face the #1 team in the state, Benilde-St. Margaret on Tuesday. Even the most cynical people would have trouble not seeing that it's already been a successful season!

The Spuds softball team wasn't able to make their own mark on the tournament, losing to SM/A 6-2 Tuesday.

But little did we know that the tots were just getting started!

At the section track & field championships they rolled - pun intended

Both the girls & boys 4x200 relay teams qualified for state, finishing second. The same is true of the 4x100 girls & boys, with the latter finishing ahead of all other runners. Evan Myran added a dominating performance in the 1600m. Michael Haugo also finished in first, in the 200. Willow Carrier nearly made it a tri-fecta but still earned a spot at state behind one runner in the girls 200. John Jenkins & Ellineus Davis were also top-2 finishers, in the 300 hurdles & discus respectively. Haugo will be a duel-competitor as he placed second in the long jump as well. The 4x400 boys were the next ones to finish before the rest.

All together the guys finished 51.5 points ahead of Willmar which subsequently earned Spencer Stowers the Coach of the Year honor.

I wasn't exaggerating by saying that the state berth for lacrosse was just the start!

There were also a couple developments on the West side of the river. Sheyenne won their second state championship in as many weeks, as the boys ⛳️ team overcome inclement weather in Bismarck - because of course the year couldn't just end smoothly. Even with Horace coming onto the scene soon Sheyenne will likely add to these first two championships, but there's nothing like being the first ones!

Along with that, Michael Dobberstein was named Class A Coach of the Year. That's a pretty swell way to end the year for North!

As far as the week's recruiting news is concerned, you have to follow along to get everything but the Walthall brothers had the biggest announcements.

Fargo's team got their easiest win of the season when Bismarck was compelled to forfeit on Saturday morning. They have one game on the schedule the rest of the month, June 26 in EGF before hitting the stretch-run in July after Independence Day.

The men's team was in Duluth for a match while the women made their home debut after an extended delay. The scoreboard at JG stadium was not their friend, losing 7-0 but they were successful in giving many great shot opportunities!

The seasons have only just begun but Post 2, 400, West Fargo & D/G/F have all jumped right into the deep-end. West Fargo made their way toward the mountains while 400 hit I-29 to Kansas for a couple days of play. The early results have been mixed but as tune-up games for the action that really matters that shouldn't be a surprise.
