The Week That Was

As an update to what was previously said, Minnesota will have the first & third of it's preseason games televised nationally on the League's Network.

Completely unrelated but still worth mentioning, the team also added another body to it's outside linebacker squad. No, not Anthony Barr who remains available for all 32 teams to consider. Second year undrafted OLB from Vandy Andre Mintze will don the Purple after one year in Mile High.

The Herd's week began with Michael Tutsie joining Hunter Luepke & Cody Mauch on a Preseason All-American List.

While that's looking ahead at what may be, junior Jared Franek was recognized as an Academic A-A for what he already accomplished. That proved to be a slight trend Tuesday as Brock Anderson, Peter Brookshaw, Cade Feeney & Tristen Roehrich were named to the League's All-Academic team, the most by any university this year.

There were also a handful of developments including future students.

Moorhead State again had a headline this week as head 🎾 coach Jason Thiner resigned after a job opportunity for his wife presented itself. The timing is tough as they just had some players sign for the upcoming school year but could lead to even better things for the program.

Minnesota was either warm or cold this week, with one hot night in AZ. The mixed-bag of outcomes aided Cleveland in closing the gap to a single game while having played six fewer games to date. It's not yet July so panic isn't warranted but the concern meter has risen since this time last week. With seven of the next 10 games being against Cleveland the division title could hang in the balance.

The one bright spot, an 11 - 1 win Saturday, included 8 innings by Dylan Bundy. It was the longest outing of the year by a starter for the team and it was his longest start since August 2020. It would be nice if that wasn't a flash in the pan but considering the proven track record of Baldelli it's unlikely that we'll see many more such instances this season.

The Firebirds ended their week & a half long homestand with a sweep of Cleburne in which Fargo outscored them 23 - 7. The hot bats travelled with them to Gary as they made it six straight wins. In the 11 - 3 victory Manny Boscan blasted-off three times, accounting for eight of the runs - which tied Chris Coste & Keury De La Cruz for the franchise record! Saturday brought an abrupt end to the streak as the Cats clawed out a 2 - 1 win. The local team was able to overcome three errors and just two hits to score four runs and take the series by a solo shot.

Reminder that scores are added daily plus there's a new home for recruiting news, so check back often!

The week started with a bang as Karter Menz began his Summer & ended his recruitment with a commitment to Minnesota. That evening many of the best graduates got their bump, set, spike on one more time at Shanley, with the largely non-native Blue Team coming out on top 3 - 2.

Tuesday Moorhead opened the state lacrosse tournament but were no match for undefeated Benilde/St. Margaret. They managed to be closer to equal with Woodbury Thursday, but even then were eliminated 15 - 7.

At the State A Girls ⛳️ Championship Park Christian finished firmly in third with an individual best of tied for fourth by Madison Doeden. There was also a good showing in the girls AA as Hawley freshman Sophie Cook finished in a tie for 7th.In the AAA boys meet Moorhead's Joe Kortan had a promising first day but struggled to a 44th place finish with an 85 on day two. Fertile/Beltrami's Rylin Petry was able to avoid such a slump and finish just off the lead while his team finished atop the leaderboard in the A tournament.

🏈 tied a bow on the week in Mayville with the 11-man team from the East besting the West 14 - 10.

Home field was the right field for the second straight week as Fargo's Tim Devaney (MSCTC) & Cornelius Wahlo (NDSCS) ran for a pair of first half touchdowns. Kasen Swenson added another through the air to Rodney Stewart to complete the evenings offensive success. MinnDak was able to add a safety in the fourth quarter as Devaney was caught in the end zone but three sacks & three interceptions, two by CB Dallas Hayes, kept that as the only points for the visitors. They will head to Kansas City prior to the Fourth of July break but return to the field at Moorhead high July 16th.

The Fusion women had their first run on the pitch Friday and held a 1 - 0 lead late in the match. Here are some images of the action.

Morehead put the spin on their own name with a 10 inning contest versus Post 400 and a 13 against EGF two nights later. 400 took their game 7 - 6 but the Blue found the stamina to sweep Wednesday. They built on it by taking care of Wayzata 2 - 1 and then split with Minot Saturday.

Post 400 also had a week! Their second squad split with Kindred, 14 - 7 & 6 - 9 while the A-team lost both sets against Bismarck & Mandan. They bounced back with a 7 - 3 victory against Wayzata.

Zata also came up just short against Post 2 in their last game of the week, 8 - 7 as the F scored three runs in the 8th inning which brought them to 13-1 to this point in the season. Wins 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12 came against Minot (2 - 0 & 7 - 1), Bismarck (7 - 5 & 9 - 6), Jamestown (16 - 0 & 8 - 3). In the bludgeoning of Jamestown they put five balls over the fence.

West Fargo also made some noise with 30 strikeouts over two games against Dickinson and then kept up with the other local teams by taking both from Wayzata Saturday.

D/G/F showed that they may also be a team to keep an eye on as they rang up 37 runs on Frazee!

Further out of town, Kindred got a no-no from Matt Pearson against the P2 second team and then finished it off with a 10 - 2 second showing. That did not prove to be a sign of things to come for them at the Dakota Classic as they lost their first two games before salvaging the weekend with a pair of wins over Watertown (5 - 0) & Renner (4 - 2).
