The Birds week began with Kevin Krause being named Batter of the Week and was highlighted by the announcement that they will be honoring the late, great pitcher Jake Laber by retiring his number 19. The only way it would be a better ending to his story at Newman is if he could be there for the presentation.
As far as the game-action is concerned, they slumped to a one-win week. The bats did enough most nights but the pitching & defense weren't able to take care of the rest. They'll have the chance to rebound with seven games at home starting Tuesday evening.
A Bison great will be leading the Cobber Cross-Country for the upcoming season. All-American & Olympic hopeful Maddie Van Beek is taking the baton from fellow NDSU alum Laura Januszewski.
Hawley graduate Parker Hanson has officially made the move from college ball in Sioux Falls to professional ball in Sioux Falls. It strains the bounds of high school consideration but between inclusion under this heading & exclusion the former option was preferred. Unfortunately his "homecoming" will have to wait as the only games left to be played by SF & F/M will be in SD. Nevertheless, it has the makings of a cool story!
The Vaders had a deflating day Saturday against Minneapolis when they came to JG Stadium, only to head back with a 46 - 7 win.
That really doesn't require elaboration.
The club closed out it's home schedule with a doubleheader Saturday. The women got one while giving up nine goals while the men lost got Duluth 2 - 1. That came after they got their first road win of the season in Sioux Falls, 3 - 1 on Wednesday.
The 9 - 1 defeat closed out a winless season for the women while the men will get one more game, in Arcadia WI before the balls are shelved.
It was another busy week on the fields across the FMWF & far beyond. The highlight occurrence came when Post 2's Luke Rustad was credited with his 400th victory as head coach. With six state titles, the regional championship & subsequent national runner-up he already possesses a sterling resume which may yet be in it's first half!
It's more proof that the game is very much alive in the region & none of the results could better illustrate that fact!
