The Week That Was

Amanda Anderson lead the way with a trend of academic honors this week as she was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year!

As a bit more proof of the 🏈 program's standing nationally, eight members of the team were included on the Shrine Bowl's 1,000 person watch list, a number which puts them squarely among many of the best operations in the country!

Moorhead State had six members of it's track & field teams earn All-Academic with the women doing so as a team as well!

Concordia added to the Summer's accolades as their men's & women's track & field teams were recognized as All-Academic teams while six of their members achieved the individual honor as well!

As the roster continues to take shape after the Gobbert trade, Austin Rivers agreed to take a minimum one-year contract to amplify the guard group. That came as the young guys kept working in Vegas, which bore fruit to the tune of a four-year deal for Josh Minott. The semi-new-look squad has 2.5 months before they will be on the court together for the first preseason game against Miami. By this time next week the final one or two spots on the roster may be filled but with the whole league waiting on what happens with a certain member of Brooklyn's team it could take much longer than that.

It likely wasn't planned as a distraction but a noxious end to a stinky week included the announcement that Byron Buxton will be the starting CF in the all-star game. No argument if you see it as lipstick on the pig of a week which included two 10+ run losses to Chicago. In losing the four-game series they've yet again allowed a division rival to hang around, the Minnesota nice approach can end any day now!

The week also included the start of the draft. Minnesota added Cal Poly shortstop Brooks Lee with the 8th pick. Scouting reports project he has a better chance of breaking through at third and agree that his bat should add power when he makes it.

After their brief all-star break Fargo was back in action against the top team from the East Division. Even after narrow defeats against Chicago Friday & Saturday they were in a three-way tie for the best record in the Association coming into Sunday. By the end of the day that tie had been broken with Fargo falling to the Hotdogs 9 - 5. With a potentially pivotal matchup against fellow 37-win Kansas City next weekend at home each outcome has increasing significance!

Reminder that scores are added daily plus there's a new home for recruiting news, so check back often!

There were a few other prep-level nuggets from the past week. From the East of the River it was announced that defenseman Joe Gramer will take part in the Hlinka Gretzky Cup with the Under-18 US Team beginning July 29th in Red Deer, Alberta.

Monday & Tuesday also brought the final pre-college for the extremely accomplished 2022 class. B-level took three of the four games, all which were captured. Early in the girls second game the worst-case-scenario happened as Adie Wagner went down with an injury, which was later announced to be a torn ACL. Wish her well on the road to recovery!

Team Conquest had it's final regular season mission of the season against the undefeated Pioneers of St. Paul. The Pios struck first but did not strike often as Fargo took a 14 - 6 lead via a Lonell Powers scoop & score after Kasen Swenson hit Rodney Stewart for a 38-yard TD. St. Paul tied the game again in the second quarter but a buzzer-beating run by Cornelius Wahlo put the home team back in front into halftime.

After the break it was all defense as the teams traded punts & turnovers, with Fargo finishing with two fumble recoveries & interceptions while SP only took the ball away once.

The Club concluded it's season Friday with comfortable win over the Minnesota TwinStars.

West Fargo got a jump on advancing deep into a major, late-season tournament as they reached the final four of the 96-team Gopher Classic for the third time in four years. Unlike the last two time they were not to be denied, finishing the tournament with a 10 - 1 win over St. Michael/Albertville!

In a quick turnaround they then were taken deep by Bismarck twice, split with Post 2 thanks to a walk-off, repeating the clutch magic against Watertown in game one of two, the second of which was a win of a less dramatic nature. Their JV team also had a good week, taking two from Casselton.

Post 400 played to a split against Minot before taking two from Williston, 7 - 0 & 6 - 2.

The Deuce started the week with their own bang, beating Moorhead 19 - 5 with a balanced attack! In the doubleheader against WF they got a no-no from Elias Harris as he finished with nine strikeouts. Sunday finished with another split as Mandan pulled out a 4 - 2 win before P2 went off for a 10 - 2 win.

Moorhead bounced back with a twin-bill of wins over Perham, including a one-hitter, which proved to be a final game of their regular season when a doubleheader versus Bemidji was cancelled. They found out Sunday that they will have home field for the sub-state tournament, July 20-24, opening with Brainerd.

D/G/F also continued it's torrid pace, breezing by Breckenridge Monday and having little more trouble to end the week as it set-up a top-seed-deciding game with Ulen/Hitterdal via lopsided wins over Barnesville & Hawley. In the wins Austin Anderson & Kayden Camacho limited the two to eight total hits. They finished off the bracket with a 13 - 3 thrashing of Ulen/Hitterdal!

Prior to their loss against West Fargo, Casselton cleaned up against Kindred, 12 - 4. They will face Thompson in the first round of the Class B Tournament. Kindred hooked Hillsboro in the four/five matchup while Oak Grove gets top-seeded May/Port to start Monday's tournament.
