Post 2
To say that I even dabble in following the area's Legion Baseball would be an exaggeration. I've thought about it but ultimately decided to fall back on not over extending myself. When history is made, the likes of which rivals the professional championship drought in Minnesota, there is no acceptable excuse to not include it. Fargo Post 2 did exactly that in double header fashion today. The first of two win or go home scenarios played out to an 8-0 win over Excelsior MN. One hour later the teams returned to the field in Sioux Falls, playing to a 3-2 nailbiter that also ended in favor of Fargo. The two losses matched the L total that Excelsior had had over the entire season leading up to today. Not only that, for Fargo it was a comeback from a butt whoopin' at the hands of Excelsior to start the tournament.
And so, Post 2 claimed the championship and in so doing earned, it's first trip to the Legion World Series for the first time since 1992. Congratulations!! Enjoy North Carolina!
Vikings
25% of the way through the preseason, the Vikings came out unscathed. There was one minor area of concern but overall, it was a good showing from first snap to final score. For more on the game though, check out the Pick Six!
Beyond what happened on the field in New Orleans, the Vikings went off like a kid in a candy store on Sunday. When everything quieted down, only two significant moves were made but the ripples of the release of Kevin McDermott & trade for Kaare (pronounced Cory) Vedvik extend well beyond what would normally apply to specialists. The first is fairly straight forward, McDermoot was cut now so that the could sign on elsewhere while the recently drafted Austin Cutting will get all the practice snaps so as to build rapport with whoever gets the nod as the holder on field goals. The extra wrinkle may come from the possibility of Vedvik reportedly being a quality punter and kicker. If the coaches are brave enough to try something new, 1 guy doing both, that would lead to the incumpents at those positions being released which would in essence open up an extra practice squad spot. Those are a lot of implications from a mere 2 moves made by the Purple today.
Bison
Another week of practices for the Football team were also able to finish without any injuries. Considering how the bug has bit them in past, each week that it doesn't happen is a great week! During Matt Entz's mid-week press conference another of the new elements was rolled out. No disputing that exact quotes are best but for the sake of character limits & expediency presser paraphrasing has been introduced on Twitter. So if for some reason you are unable to listen, check out the Purple Bizon account for a rapid sharing of many of the main points by the coach each week, this season!
Meanwhile in Puerto Rico the men's Basketball team took care of business in unsurprising fashion. The core of the team is as set as it could be but I'm confident that the practices and the games will help the new members of the team shorten their learning curves as they prepare to take some of the vacated playing time starting in the 2020 season!
Redhawks
The week once again ended with a L but the Birds of Summer expanded their division lead and held onto their American Association best record. That was despite the sudden and unfortunate (for the team) news that managers son T.J. Bennett would be leaving the team to take a college coaching position. As one of the top players on the team, it's a blow that hopefully won't derail the team's aspirations!
Invaders
As Summer draws ever closer to it's conclusion, the Fargo area has already gotten a Football championship. What seemed like much less than a 25% shot a couple weeks ago is now at 100% as the Invaders knocked off the Sioux City Stampede in the Northern Elite Football League championship. The nine to zero lead that they built in the first half would have been enough, as the Stampede only managed seven points. Even as time wound down in the fourth quarter "Mr. 100" Ja'vonte Johnson added some insurance with a second touchdown to secure the trophy. His 331 yards with two passing scores were too much for the home team to overcome. If the trophy wasn't enough of a reward, another game was added to their schedule - Oct. 20 at US Bank Stadium as part of a two day, 13 game event. That's a good week for the semi's!
