The biggest news to come out of Eagan didn't come from the castle. Future Ring of Honor resident Everson Griffen chose to sign with the Star. They're one of the many teams vying to play in the last game of the year so it wasn't a surprise in that regard but the reported terms of his deal are. He was unlikely to get more than 1 year at this point in the process but a max of 6 million has steal written all over it for the Jones family team. As I see it there are two predominant possible explanations as to why he is relocating for the year. 1) He wanted a change of scenery, no matter what MN offered. 2) MN decided to take a page from New England & let him go before he completely falls off. Either way, the d-line, the defense & the entire team won't have the same kind of attitude without him.
One of a kind.
The ongoing clampdown on college sports took it's final hit on North Fargo. The 🏈 team being forced to wave the white flag matters the most to the most fans but the Summit's decision to postpone all Fall sports to the Spring is every bit as deflating. It's beyond me how there wasn't a way to get a couple of the sports in as scheduled but that was the determination of the presidents.
As for 🏈, now we all have to wait & see what the seniors (& Trey Lance) will do if there is indeed a Spring season.
IF a fifth quarterback is able to step in & lead the team to a championship then I will return to an earlier possession of everyone else in the sub-division just quitting. Big if indeed, but no more unlikely than a one-year starter from the FCS getting top-10 draft hype!
From one future pro to another who is already getting paid. Former guard Sofija Zivaljevic signed to play with MBK Ruzomberok in Slovakia. As one of the top teams in Europe she will have a great chance to continue improving & who knows, maybe she'll end up doing a Summer in the States in the future.
As for the men's 🏀 team, they had their first hit to the schedule as the Pac12 decided to take the rest of the year off. The guys were supposed to hit the coast three months from now against John Wooden's old squad but now will look for a replacement, even though it may prove to be futile.
One more bright note is that Moorhead's own, future member of the ⛳️ team, Ian Simonich won the Pine to Palm this weekend.
If you've been paying attention you surely know that the women's 🏀 team has developed into one of the best in the country in recent years. Well thanks to some recently released metrics it's not just about what happens on the court.
They had the 10th-best team GPA in the nation (3.726) while also getting the 25th most fans.
The other news is decidedly less positive as the Northern Sun canceled Fall competition & went as far as to extend the freeze through the end of the year. So we're all going to have to wait to see the local 🏀 standouts on the court at Nemzek.
The Minnesota Bombers got back on track with series wins over Milwaukee & Kansas City in identical fashion with opener & closer wins while dropping the second game. It got even more quirky in the second series as all three games ended with 4-2 final scores. I haven't yet seen how much of a statistical anomaly that is, but I can't imagine it's happened a ton of teams, even during 162 game seasons!
The birds dropped another series against Winnipeg which left them in the cellar. They closed out the week by taking a pair from Chicago but that still leaves them two games behind the dogs.
Even though MN 🏈 is on hiatus, both of the previews for Moorhead's high schools are out now.
