Game week started with one more tweak to the roster, adding former Chicago CB Duke Shelley to the practice squad.
Then came the game, which you read about through the link.
It took all of one game for Cody Mauch to show that the draft hype is not affecting his edge & efford as he was recognized as the best offensive lineman in the Conference.
The first competition of the week came on the course as both the men & women put in multiple days and were rewarded for their efforts.
As the weekend got started 🏐 split with Chicago State & Central Michigan while Olivia Watson scored her second game winner of the season to down Green Bay. Friday ended in Moorhead as the ladies & gents both handled business on the cross country path.
Saturday brought more success as Montana State got spiked, 3 - 0 and North Carolina A&T was dispatched from the Dome well before time ran out.
⚽️ made it a sweep with a 1 - 0 win as senior Lavin Douglass got a rebound to clear the defense.
As the pros went, it was a tough debut by both Christian Watson & Trey Lance as their teams lost & they each missed opportunities to impact the contests. In the Capital, Carson Wentz had his own issues (2 INTs) but also threw four touchdowns to lead a winning effort. No word yet on how game one went for Cordell Volson, but as an OL, silence can be golden (even following a crazy, overtime loss to Pittsburgh). There will be more on them in the coming days.
It was a busy weekend for the Fire-breathers, with mostly positive results when it was all said & done.
The women got it started on the ⚽️ field against Crookston, with the game-winner coming off the foot of West Fargo's Callyn Johnson midway through the first half.
🏐 followed suit against the Golden Eagles with a 3 - 1 win, coming a few points shy of a shutout. They bumped their performance up Saturday with a 3 - 0 knockout of Bemidji.
Cross Country finished Friday with their home event, getting a fifth-place performance from the guys while the women's score has yet to be posted.
After traveling to Fayette, IA Steve Laqua's team decided to get it's first win of the season, riding a 17-point second quarter to do so.
The lone blemish came Sunday as the Beavers got the better on the pitch to win 1 - 0 with a second half score.
Concordia 🏐 had it's home opener Tuesday against Presentation, coming up just short in the fifth.
The ladies of the pitch picked it up Wednesday with a 7 - 2 effort against MN-Morris as Grace Lawlor netted a hat trick. All three of the guys' scores came from a different source but in a shutout effort it was plenty to send Morris home with the L as well. The gals were back at it Saturday against Wisconsin-Stout, another win for the Cobbs as they struck twice in the second half.
The Cooper Mattern-lead 🏈 team also did not disappoint as they teetered on the edge of a 600-yard game while limiting Presentation to 13 points! In his first start the Shanley alum threw two interceptions, but doubled that number of scores while also toting the ball for the most yards. If he can bring that sort of juice against Gustavus & St. John's then he won't have to worry about the hook the rest of the year.
Prior to the start of preseason action the Bolts got some juice in the form of Matt Cullen buying a stake in the team. As the most accomplished of the area's 🏒 players it's a natural fit and goes along with efforts he's continued to make to elevate the game in the region. How effective the efforts will be won't be known until several years have passed but it's great to see him re-invest in the community!
On the ice the team beat Waterloo 3 - 1 Friday and smashed Tri-City 9 - 3 Saturday.
One game remained in the regular season as the week commenced. In the balance hung the title of Division champion but it was the Monarchs that managed to make the right moves, supplanting the Birds from the top spot. Before the second season got underway Alex DuBord, Leo Piña & Drew Ward were named Postseason All-Stars while Chris Coste was named Manager of the Year.
The best-of-three opening series against Winnipeg deflated some of that positivity as the Fish took the Birds 6 - 3. That proved to be a one-game blip as the Hawks soared back with 8 - 3 & 7 - 3 victories to advance and face Kansas City in the West Division championship beginning Monday at Newman!
Reminder that scores and recruiting news are updated regularly so check back often!
Now for this week's highlights
Moorhead made the first move of the week, elevating Logan Wiemken to head coach for boys lacrosse.
On the court West Fargo, North, Shanley & Davies all had shutout wins Tuesday. West Fargo, Davies & North repeated the feat Thursday and were joined by South. Sheyenne didn't go spotless but remain undefeated and atop the state rankings. Across the River, Ada/Borup was the only team to get sweeps, doing so four times. Out of town on the North Dakota side Northern Cass, Kindred, Hillsboro, Enderlin & Hankinson each got a clean win as well.
The 🎾 court also had some highlights as Sheyenne & South continued to carry the torch in the region with 8 - 1 victories over Valley City & West Fargo Thursday. Two days later the Mustangs improved their state-wide bonafides going 4 - 1 & 5 - 0 against Williston & Bismarck
On the pitch Davies continued his winning streak with a 5 - 0 decision over Central while West Fargo remained in the two-hole with a 3 - 0 win over South.
As it typically does, Friday night also included some great displays. Shanley put on a special teams clinic the likes of which is rarely seen. They were nearly matched by North as they marched over Wahpeton. Sheyenne also put on a show, beating Century by 27. That also applies to Kindred, Central Cass, Hillsboro & Hankinson all with wins by at least 30 points.
