A state championship, state tournament berths in several sports, myriad D1 athletes, that's the last few years for Moorhead High in short. That's a good run!
And it got a whole lot better in the past week
In their third appearance at the MN State Boys Lacrosse tournament the Spuds got their first victory in a defensive battle against Mahtomedi and then hung 12 scores on Chisago Lakes in the consolation final to add some hardware to the trophy case. Those wins weren't enough to get any of the members on the All-Tournament team, so they've still got boxes unchecked but it was a rousing success for the program as they leave the baby years.
That didn't take the cake however, as the best accomplishment came from the speech team as Greta Homuth & Olivia Dahlberg took the top spot for the Duo Interpretative national event! Speech is not a sport and as a competition it's as niche as there is, but to navigate a field of thousands of high schools all the way to the summit is just as tip-top and should be recognized accordingly!

Grant Nelson Watch continued
Despite rumors that the decision would come this week it has yet to come through.

The same wasn't true for several former & future members of the athletics department.
Michael Tutsie got the best news as his hometown team signed him to their 90-man roster Thursday! NDSU has had exceptional production from the safety position for the duration of their run near the top of the FCS but he's the first to break through to a roster so it's just one more selling-point that the coaches will be able to make to recruits. Being able to pick the brain of Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck & Bob Sanders can only help his chances of sticking with a practice squad or better spot, though the same possibility exists for all of his new teammates so it will take more than just that.
However training camp shakes-out for him, it's a dream-come-true!

That could also be how Jared Franek & Michael Caliendo would describe their decision to transfer, reportedly to Iowa, but not officially confirmed at this time.
They could have dueled their way to the title bouts from Fargo but donning the Black & Gold will get them more exposure, more high-level competition & numbers in their financial accounts. That last one is probably what truly made the difference between staying & going.
A collective will happen for NDSU but whatever is in the works seems to be going at a snails pace. Even if the organizers had something available to offer the two premier wrestlers it would have come well-short of what Iowa's could write on a napkin but the lack of any sort of option for the local operation still stings.
And hopefully it is that piercing which leads to quicker development on the home front!

It wasn't all about departures as football got a big commitment from Minot as lineman Coy Okeson spurned Wyoming & Nebraska to stay closer to home to begin his college experience!
The Husker state took another hit as Dave Richman was able to harvest from there again as forward Treyson Anderson committed to begin the week. A future facilitator for the team then became the second commit, as legacy guard Andy Stefonowicz put his decision out there.
It's a long process between the announcements and the three of them impacting for the teams on the biggest stages but with their capabilities, more success is on the horizon!

Future success also seems likely for Park Christian as they had four members of their golf teams finish in the top-20. Freshman Ryan Nelson had the best showing, taking sixth. 15th by FR Hailey Frueh, 18th by SO Anika Stromme & 19th by FR Kylee West helped lead them to a fourth place team finish. Ada/Borup & Fertile/Beltrami also checked-in with top-10 finishes on the boys A side while Hawley's Sophie Cook finished her sophomore season in second place for AA!

It's still early in the season but Post 2, West Fargo & Post 400 have all already shown signs that they could come out of the region when the season becomes win-or-go-home. It may not seem like much but as the local flag-bearers of the sport during the prime time it is played, the better the local teams are, the better for the future.

Another good week in the Valley!
