Sunday 7*

As the transition day of the weeks unfolded it brought to tragic announcements as long-time Fargo Marathon director Mark Knutson passed-away from injuries sustained in a transportation accident.

Not long after, former Davies standout & Moorhead State football member Ty Jochim was announced to have died by suicide.

There is no more somber way to begin the weekly talk of the biggest sporting news in the area but matters of life & death outweigh the rest by factors of millions...billions, no comparison.

Thoughts and prayers going out to all those who are feeling the losses of those loved ones today and for years to come.

There is no good way to transition from that into the other topics but there are other developments from the last week which merit mentioning

Long expected, Minnesota secured the long-term services of it's cornerstone player as Anthony Edwards agreed-to and signed his max extension this week.

Shortly-thereafter, a few of the players tasked with helping get the team to the second & third rounds (worker ants if you will) over the next few seasons also put pen to paper - Shake Milton, Luka Garza, Leonard Miller, Troy Brown.

Everyone focuses on the few who command so much of the salary cap space but those types of additions will have to be at their best for real success to happen in downtown Minneapolis - breaking news, I know.

The Summer Team also continued to generate buzz with Kenta Maeda continuing a sizzling stretch on the mound following his return from the IR. It lines up with the rest of the rotation that continues to pull much more than half the weight!

That of-course includes Pablo Lopez who is high on every category, threw his first complete game and was named an all-star Saturday afternoon! It hasn't been all sunshine & candy by the acquisition and Luis Arraez has been sorely-missed in the batting order but calling the trade a success or failure until at least September would be premature.

With three losses to Baltimore to close-out the first half of the season they are now a half-game behind Cleveland. 💩

A few hours after that failure they made a move that might help their offense five years from now. With it's fifth-overall pick Minnesota selected a high school outfielder named Walker Jenkins. The region won't get to enjoy Walker Kessler so perhaps he will help make up for that, five+ years from now.

I'm sure there are already multiple scouting reports about the young man but no one has a real clue whether he will even reach St. Paul so just gonna rest on the quip about his name.

Players of similar ages to Jenkins from our cut of the Terra Firma also had success at tournament play in the Cities this past week. Post 400 played to 3 - 1 while Moorhead notched an extra W to win their pool and advance to the round of 16!

But as was said off the top, sports is waaaaaaaaay below the loss of life and that's how this one will finish.
