Winter came on like a fast break and means we're that much closer to everything that the hardwood will include! Every season has it's own flavor but with new additions to the local scene & significant turnover from last year to this one the 2022/2023 season will be a ride all it's own.
In preparation for the first games this edition comes courtesy of coach Bryce Laxdal talking about Northern Cass boys hoops.
Before looking ahead, what are the best memories from last season?
"Gone from last year's team are 8 Seniors who all played a major role in our success. We made 190 + 3's and teams had to guard us 1-5, when we were on we could play with anyone in the state. A come from behind win on a last second shot against Cavalier on the road was a great memory."
Did your team participate in any camps this past Summer? If so, how did your team benefit from that? Have you already had players in the gym working on their game this Fall?
"We had a great summer. We are going to be a young team this upcoming year so this summer was very critical in our development. We attended team camps at Mayville State, MSUM x2, Carrington. We continued our lifting program at the school 3x a week and had open gym Sunday nights."
Landon Moser has been identified as a top player in the region, how have you seen him improve? How might he continue to progress?
"Landon Moser will be a potential All-Region guy. He can score from all 3 levels and play some great defense. Look for Landon to be one of the top players in Region 1 the next two seasons." Who are some of the players you anticipate will help fill-in for the ones that departed? What do they bring to the roster? "Andrew Schenck should be a defensive cog for the Jags. He is a physical presence, if he can continue to develop an offensive game he could be a very tough matchup." "Isaac Johnson will be our 5 this season, he is very active and very athletic. He will have to man the middle all season for Northern Cass. Staying out of foul trouble and on the court will be critical for sustained success." "Trey Husar has come a long way over the summer. His shot from two seasons ago has returned and he's about 6'3" now. I would expect Trey to be a swiss army knife for us, he can play many different positions and is willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win." "Hudson Rietschel is only an 8th grader but I expect him to continue on the Varsity level. He has a great basketball IQ and is an absolute knock down shooter. He needs to develop physically and work on the defensive side of the ball to get solid/productive minutes." "Myles Froehlich is a Freshman point guard that could push for Varsity minutes. He understands the game, has a great basketball IQ and can pass people open. He is undersized but can be a pest defensively, I like the way he plays the game."
Is there a certain aspect of the game that you think will be the strength of your team?
"We will be very green, I am hoping that we will compete every night and improve through the season."
To boil it down, what would make the upcoming season a successful one?
"Continuous improvement"
There's been a lot of talk about the proposed three-class division. Do you have a comment about that?
"The current 3-class proposal does not but shift a current problem to schools like Northern Cass. The multiplier used to get the privates out of Class B does not create a more level playing field for us.I believe there is a need for a 3rd class but Northern Cass is opposed to the current plan and would like to see changes made."
