Winter came on like a fast break and means we're that much closer to everything that the hardwood will include! Every season has it's own flavor but with new additions to the local scene & significant turnover from last year to this one the 2022/2023 season will be a ride all it's own.
In preparation for the first games this edition comes courtesy of coach Trevor Olson talking about his first season at the helm of South girls hoops.
As you go into your first season as the head coach at South what are you most excited about?
"New is always exciting, having the opportunity to build new relationships with new student athletes within the program and the South community has been special so far and we haven’t even gotten to the season yet!"
Did your team participate in any camps this past Summer? If so, how did your team benefit from that?
"Yes we went to VCSU, Concordia, and one of MSUMs team camps. We got to compete against a few teams the girls wouldn’t normally get a chance to, which is always fun and unique."
Did any players surprise you with what they showed during the workouts?
"I wouldn’t say anyone ‘surprised’ with it being my first summer and first look at the group. It was nice to see the commitment over the summer to our weekly routine, especially with most of the younger kids in the program."
Have you already had players in the gym working on their game this Fall?
"We have had open gyms going, with a lot of our girls playing volleyball and their success this year I haven’t had the chance to see everyone together yet, which makes the season start even more exciting. Ready to start to see everything come together."
Teigan Malo has been identified as a player to watch in the region, do you have a sense yet which other players will help take some of the pressure off her? As far as you can tell so far, what do they bring to the roster?
"I’m so excited to see Teigan’s growth from last year to this, after watching some film from last year to even this summer she’s already grown so much within her role. With so many players graduating that were important pieces last year, we’re going to have a lot of fresh faces in new spots this coming year. Having the experience of senior Grace Hoselton is going to be vital, and the experience freshman Talyn Hoffert gained while filling in for the team last year will help her and us this coming year as she steps into a bigger role."
To boil it down, what would make the upcoming season a successful one?
"With so many new faces our only goal is to focus on getting better each day. As long as we keep that goal in mind, I’m excited to see what this team can do this year."
There's been a lot of talk about the proposed three-class division. Do you have a comment about that?
I’m excited for our state as a whole, I think this is a step in the right direction. It would change life for us significantly, but for the state I’m excited.
Is there anything else you would like people to know about your program or players?
"We have the opportunity to grow as a team this year. Even with the departure of some key individuals, this is an exciting time for Bruin Basketball. Our players are committed to success in the classroom and on the court. Our definition of success hasn’t been determined yet, but we look forward to creating it together."
