The journey back to the State Tournament began Thursday evening in Glyndon, MN. With Duluth basketball bound Owen Leach still under center and potential D2 running back Jordan Summers flanking him more often than not, the Rebels went right down the field on the opening drive - a score by Summers.
Thief River Falls' opening opportunity did not go quite so well as Leach picked off the first pass attempt. They would give up some more yards to their hosts but then returned the favor by collecting their own interception in the end zone.
That opportunity ended with a foot to the ball and lead to Summers putting his foot in the ground for nearly a quarter of his 224 total yards and his second score. The script continued after another Thief River punt, with the same result to put the Rebels ahead 19 - 0 just before halftime.
After the break Thomas Thureen tipped the turnover margin in Dilworth's favor but it would last all of one play as TRF jumped on a fumble to get it back. The ensuing possession moved forward, then backward, then was punted away.
Aided by a pair of face mask penalties D/G/F was on the edge of the red zone from the outset. The Prowlers defense bowed up to force a fourth-down but then Summer broke off score #4 to make it 25 - 0. Despite missing three of four PATs coach Soderberg continued to show faith in his kicker, a bit more evidence that the big picture is clear in mind.
Another short possession by Thief River preempted a two-play scoring-drive as Nick Waale ripped-off a 44-yard run followed by Bodey Devries in the zone. The 32-point lead prompted snaps for second stringers the rest of the way.
The Prowlers could not capitalize on their next possession but were able to get on the board before the end as Maxton Peterson found wide space, took the pass & walked in. It was all she wrote as clock ran out soon after.
D/G/F 32, Thief River Falls 7
Four scores with 224 yards on the ground while adding some through the air as well made this a no-brainer
