This West Fargo squad returns without some stalwart players but the talent pool is deep, so it's next players up for coach Palczewski's team as they return from being one shot away from state qualification last March.
What are some of the highlights of last season were for your team?
"Last season was a coming of age season for our team. We played a lot of young players that were challenged in every game. Missing the state tournament was motivating for many of them and they learned a lot from last years seniors."
How do you plan on building upon what you taught your returning players last season?
"Our players need to learn how to consistently compete in practice. It begins there. Whether that be in one-on-one, rebounding, shooting drills, we need to compete much harder than we did last year." What effect do you think the lack of summer camp & extra workouts will have on your players?
"The parks were open. People have hoops. The players who are driven found ways to get better. Some players didn’t. It all comes out on the court and I know that a lot of Packers put in a lot of hard work which will pay off." As you have thought about it, who are some of the players who will need to step up to replace Hunter Lyman's & Matt Miller's production?
"We need a defensive stopper and emotional leader as Matt was, and we also need someone to replace Hunter’s rebounding. Our rebounding will need to be a team effort and try to replace Hunter’s number in the aggregate. As far a leadership, our three returning starters, Carter Birrenkott, Carson Hegerle, and Brett Limke will have to assert themselves early and set the tone." Is there a certain aspect of the game that you think will be the strength of your team?
"I am not sure about our strengths but I can tell you we will be undersized and we will have to play with a lot of toughness to compete defensively, on the glass, and to score tough buckets inside. If we can turn these challenges into strengths by the end of the season we will have become a very good team." Who do you think the leaders for your team will be this season? How have they shown leadership qualities to you in the past?
"As I stated before, Birrenkott, Hegerle, and Limke will need to assert themselves early. We work as hard at developing leadership in our program as we do making baskets. All three have made significant progress since last season. If I were to name one player that needs to really take charge it would be Limke as he is our point guard and will be responsible for making this team go. He is a remarkable basketball mind and he makes very few mistakes. If he is able to get the other guys to play as smart and as hard as him it will be a good year." Is there anything else you would like people to know about your program or your players?
"We have a couple players that slid under the radar last year in Joel Pease and Parker Nelson and both of those guys bring something unique to our team. Parker is an outstanding defensive player and Joel is a natural scorer. Having both of those guys play significant roles will be a good thing this year."
