Starting a season with a crosstown rival may never happen again. That's the hope at least, considering what forced the circumstance. Or at least that's what I might have said before the game between the West Fargo schools!
After it was over there didn't seem like much better of a way to start the season.
In between, West Fargo got started with a 9-0 and held the lead until a bucket by Jah'Heem Leake put the Mustangs ahead 29-28 with six minutes left in the half.
West Fargo responded with a 22-10 burst thanks to aggressive full-court defense and a string of three's that finished with them ahead 50-39.
When play resumed the most obvious adjustment by Sheyenne seemed to be their doggedness. In contrast to the first, they became equally as aggressive as the home team. The counterpunching helped them close the gap again and then pull even at 80 with less than 3 to go. The next two minutes passed and Sheyenne had a one point advantage until another three by West Fargo fell, which proved to the difference.
Even without the histrionics of a buzzer-beater to force overtime, the game had the feel of a March classic down the stretch. With the room for improvement that all teams have at this point in the season both teams showed that we may be in for a great winter of hoops!
West Fargo 87, Sheyenne 84
Jacksen Moni showed the inside/outside game that makes him such a threat on the way to a game-high 24. Not far behind was junior Dominic Dosmann with 19. Leake finished with 16 while Ben Manson added 11 to round out the double-digit scorers for Sheyenne.
West Fargo was lead by Brett Limke's 23, including six from deep. They got 21 from Carter Birrenkott with all but one coming from inside the arc - the other being from the line. Joel Pease added 16 while Carson Hegerle finished with 14.
